Don’t Hide It Away – Let Your Happiness Show!

Aug 8th

Yesterday was uncomfortably warm, today is going to take uncomfortable and bring it up to miserable – at least in my mind. Hubby always opens up the windows first thing in the morning to let in the cooler morning air, and I go around closing it all up by 9:00.  Everything seems relatively comfortable until the sun gets high in the sky and comes beating down through the skylight. To fight that off I have the bedroom a/c turned on and a fan pulling the cooler air into the hallway, and another fan halfway down the hall to continue pulling the cooler air out into the living room. It certainly makes me grateful that the treadmill is in the bedroom where the air is cool!

Verse of the Day

August 8, 2018

For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation.

Psalm 149:4

Thoughts on the Verse of the Day

Jesus, who left heaven and made himself a servant, did so to enable the last to be first, the servant to be greatest, and the least to be best. For ages, the arrogant, the abusive and the powerful have found it easy to reject the call of Christ — after all he died and they’re “important” and have no need for a Savior. But those who are humble find him to not only be Savior, but also Conqueror, King, and Friend.

Food for Thought

Today is the day after election day and watching the news on it is a combination of annoying and entertaining. I saw some early morning results in a race here in Washington State that showed the Republican contender WAY out in front of the Democrat, which had some of the talking heads on the local news nearly spinning themselves out of control. But . . but . . . but . . . trying to come up with a reason. Maybe it’s because we are sick of the crap and the conservative voters are stepping up?! I don’t know what the outcome will be, since truly the day after is far too soon to call a race in which the polls close at 8 p.m. and they are all either dropped off at drop boxes around the state, or mailed in. If someone mailed it to be postmarked yesterday, it won’t arrive at it’s destination for a couple of days, so the race is still open. Calm down people. We’ll see what the results are when all the votes are counted.

Bullet Journal Day – I don’t know if this is necessarily a new celebration, or if I just missed it. I can’t actually find anything ABOUT the celebration itself, and since I did not have a clue what a Bullet Journal was, I had to look it up.  I found this simple explanation – or the simplest I could find – and had to chuckle at the way this blogger talked about it. We are all grown-ups here, but here’s a warning, she uses a few slightly off-color words. I’m sure they are all words we have heard and likely use (I know I do!), but to me it just adds some extra personality and creates an entertaining read.  It is an interesting concept, and since I’m a live by list person, I may look further into this! Click the link above to see what it’s all about!  Here is a Bullet Journal ready made with the grid pattern suggested in the article for a very reasonable price.

The Date to Create – This is also a newer sounding one to me, or at least one I haven’t seen before.  This is the day to put an effort to end putting off creating something that we have been meaning to do.  It doesn’t matter what it is, just do it.  I have been working on something myself lately but got stalled out on one part of it because of my lack of knowledge. Today is the day I need to work through that and get it done!  It doesn’t what it is you want to create – a scrapbook, a new recipe, a quilt, a garden, or a presentation – just do it! You’ll be proud of yourself once you do.

Happiness Happens – What a wonderful thought!  Happiness Happens.  Do you know who “owns” this motto?  Get this – I had to chuckle – It’s the 17th birthday of the “Secret Society of Happy People”.  Secret? Are there so few of them that they have to be secret?  And I’m giggling again . . . it’s just funny!  Why would happiness need to be secret?  No matter the reason, this is a great one to celebrate and be happy about . . . get it? Happy?  hahahaha sorry – it’s just funny.

Odie Day – We are all familiar with Garfield. He’s widely celebrated and known everywhere. But what about his happy little sidekick Odie?  Odie deserves his own day for putting up with Garfield for all these years!  Most people call Odie unintelligent and highly gullible, but that he is lovable little pooch.  And we all know that no matter how much Garfield torments Odie, he does love his little buddy.  So, break out the party hats, confetti, horns, streamers and ice cream cake for this long tongued, cute yellow dog.  Some sites say he’s a beagle, but he never struck me as that!  He may not be able to talk, but I’m sure he is thanking us in his thoughts.

Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Night – Many people do not know that zucchini is a fruit and not a vegetable.  Seriously! It is!  This year I didn’t get a garden in because of the timing of my knee injury and how long it took to heal and I really miss the zucchini!   A single plant can produce what seems like an endless supply and a small row – well you’ll never be done with it, which is what brings about this day. By the time August arrives most gardeners are reaping more zucchini than they can possible use.  After using it daily in everything from soups and stews to breads and dips, they get desperate to get rid of it and start giving it away.  Eventually everyone starts to avoid them, so they sneak it onto their neighbors’ porches and run away!  Why hasn’t anyone left any on MY porch? I’d LOVE LOVE LOVE some!  I do have some frozen from my garden last year. Maybe I need to break it out and make something delicious with it . . . when it cools down enough to be able to use the oven.

Wear Your Mother’s Jewelry Day – This one is so awesome! It was created by Barbara J. Feldman to encourage people to dust off the jewelry left to them by their mothers and remember some beautiful memories.  My Mom, thank goodness, is still with us so I don’t have any inherited jewelry from her. The items my Grandma told me I could have were taken by other family members, but that does not mean that I do not have wonderful memories of going through her jewelry box with her and trying on the pieces that she had. It was all costume jewelry, but to me it was beautiful. She had this set with little roses for earrings and as a pendant on a chain. I remember carefully trying them on (though the clip-on earrings HURT!), carefully holding her watch, and pinning all her broaches onto my shirt.  Aw, I’m tearing up. I miss her so much and those memories bring it all to the surface. (I took the picture from Ms. Feldman’s website – check it out!)

This Day in History –

1890 – The Daughters of the American Revolution organization is created.

1945 – The USSR finally declares war against Japan.

Food Celebration of the Day –

National Frozen Custard Day – What is frozen custard exactly?  Well, it is sometimes called French ice cream and it does resemble ice cream.  Due to the higher concentration of egg yolks and butterfat, frozen custard is richer, creamer and softer than ice cream.  It resembles Crème Anglaise or Spanish flan and is traditionally baked into a crust.  In the United States frozen custard can be traced to Coney Island, NY and was introduced to the Midwest at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago.  Frozen custard is typically made fresh throughout the day.  I did see an interesting comparison to the fat content between different frozen treats:  frozen yogurt – as low as 0 percent; Gelato – 2 to 8 percent; soft-serve ice cream – 4 to 6 percent; hard scoop ice cream – 14 to 18 percent; frozen custard – at least 10 percent butterfat.  Soooo let me get this straight – frozen custard is richer than ice cream, but less fat?  Alrighty then!

I think I’m going to get a light lunch, then get myself into the other room and onto the treadmill for a little while. After that I have some light housework to do and to figure out what we are going to have for dinner that won’t heat up the house even more. I do believe we will be grilling again!  Take some time to stay cool, smile, laugh and find something to celebrate. God bless you and I’ll see you tomorrow.
