Yesterday I was sitting at work, when suddenly this blinding light hit me in the face through the window. It was the sun! I know, that isn’t a shock to many people who live in places where the sun actually shines in the winter, but I have lived in the Pacific NW all of my life, and seriously, from October through March, we live in a dark and drizzly world. Personally, I love the rain. I don’t even mind the clouds. I prefer the snow, but after our snow from last week, if I say that out loud anywhere, I’m likely to get my head bitten off. My boss said that she was happy to see the sun, I muttered that I still wanted snow, and she looked at me like she wanted to smack me with something. Fortunately, there wasn’t anything close enough to throw, and I can’t honestly say she’d have great aim anyway. Now my PREVIOUS boss, she used to play softball and according to her, has a great arm. She knew I’d throw whatever it was back at her though, and good aim or not, I would have kept throwing until I hit her. I meant it though – I really would like at least ONE more little snow.
Verse of the Day
February 21, 2019
We give thanks to you, O God, we give thanks, for your Name is near; men tell of your wonderful deeds.
Thoughts on the Verse of the Day
“What a wonderful God we serve!” More than just the words of a song, these words are true beyond our understanding. To be so powerful, vast, and marvelous and yet still know us and bless us with his personal attention and care is beyond understanding. Yet God sent Jesus to remind us that he is not only God Almighty; he is also Immanuel, God with us!
Food for Thought
Seriously? This guy hires two Nigerians to pose as white guys in MAGA hats, to attack him and pretend it was a hate crime that was both racist AND anti-gay, goes through the time and trouble to buy the props for it, pays these guys off, and was even at the point – when he thought the two guys in custody were white strangers – of being willing to swear they were the ones who attacked him, and he gets charged with “Felony Disorderly Conduct for Filing a False Police Report”???? Seriously? This was clearly a hate crime. He would have let two innocent people go to jail to push his agenda! He needs to be in jail, and he needs to be there for a very long time. Holy crap, this ticks me off!
Card Reading Day – How often have you gone to the store to look for a card and read them one after another, giggling through some, shaking your head at others. Today is a fun day because it’s set aside to read cards . . . no more and no less. Why? I have no idea, but I am betting this was set up by some sort of card company, wouldn’t you think? Maybe while you’re at it you can pick up a few for upcoming birthdays and holidays. Good luck finding any good ones though – have you seen some of the silliness that is supposed to pass for humorous cards? And at such a high price? There is a little shop near me that has consistently funny cards and has become my go-to place for all cards. I hope you have someplace like that near you too. Have fun reading!
International Mother Language Day – It is estimated that there are 6,500 languages spoken in the world today. Sadly, around 2,000 of those have fewer than 1,000 people who speak them. Out of those 6,500 languages, half of the world’s population speaks the 13 of them, including Mandarin, English and Hindi. I know that many of the languages that are on the edge of extinction are in other countries and that is sad, but we cannot overlook the languages without our own borders that are going to be extinct soon. I am talking about the languages of the Native American tribes, the languages and cultures that are disappearing. This makes me so sad, because their history is so rich and filled with amazing stories and life lessons that we could all learn from. Much of this history is not recorded in any written form, being traditionally passed down through verbal means for many generations. Many of today’s youth don’t care to learn, and as the elders pass away, opportunities are being lost. So incredibly sad, and such a waste.
The Great America Spit Out Day – There are so many days set up for convincing people to quit smoking that I was really happy to see this one set up to encourage people who chew tobacco to quit too. I used to work in an industry that has many people who chew tobacco and I can honestly say it is just as disgusting, if not more so, than smoking is. It actually has 3 to 4 times more nicotine than cigarettes, and it leaves a nasty residue on your teeth, causes unimaginably nasty breath, and cancer of the gums. I’ve had drivers come in to bring me paperwork who have not only been chewing, but they’ve been drinking rancid truck stop coffee on top of it – talk about adding insult to injury. Oh, my word, it is awful! If a chewer stops this month, they have time to be well over the habit by summer and can enjoy all that time out in the beautiful weather without having to drag along a spit cup/bottle or can with them. Join others across the nation today and spit it out . . . and leave it out. You can do it!
This Day in History –
1972 – Richard Nixon becomes the first U.S. President to visit China.
Food Celebration of the Day –
National Sticky Bun Day – Buttery and streaked with cinnamon, homemade sticky buns are in a class all their own. No need to hit the mall to enjoy their gooey goodness — make some at home. This one does bring up some happy memories for me. There is a bakery in the town where I was raised, it’s locally quite famous! They always had these pecan sticky buns that I couldn’t get often enough to make me happy. They still make them, and each time I walk past the store I stare at these cute little treats in the window and feel like I need to wipe the drool off of my face. There are a few really delicious looking sticky bun recipes that are low-carb, but I’m not going to lie. They just don’t measure up to the ones in that baker. The low carb ones are a nice alternative that will keep you on the straight and narrow with the new eating plan, so to that end, I am thinking about combining a couple of them to make a simple, delicious treat that can be good for breakfast OR for dessert this weekend. Not tonight. Nobody truly has time for that after work, do they? Here’s one of them. Enjoy!
- Schnecker (German Cinnamon Buns)
- Coconutty Orange-Apricot Sticky Buns
- Super-Easy Sticky Buns
- Cranberry Sticky Buns
- Overnight Praline Sticky Buns
- Sticky Bun Cookies
- Rum Buns
Well, shoot. I want sticky buns now. I REALLY want one. I don’t know if I’ll be able to stop thinking about it. *sigh* I’m taking my salad leftovers and going to work. No sticky buns for me this morning! Have a great day! God bless you and I’ll see you tomorrow.
