Tell Me About Your Gorgeous Grandma!

Monday – it’s traditionally been a dreaded day for me, but lately it’s lacking in drama. It’s been the day I’ve chosen to clean up around here – of course I seem to do that every day – and start a project for the week. I also tend to make phone calls to take care of business, look for jobs, etc. Basically, it’s busy, but not the same sort of busy that has me scrambling out of the house early. I know that day is coming again, hopefully soon, but for now I’ll enjoy a different sort of Monday. I promised Moose a little walk before it gets too hot, and it is getting that way already, so as soon as I’m done posting this I am getting my hair pulled up in a pony tail, putting on my walking shoes and we are heading out. I’m not the most energetic dog mama, but he deserves his time outside, even when I don’t feel like doing anything in the heat. He may even get some time playing in the hose! He LOVES leaping around trying to catch the water, which cools him down and always makes me laugh. (and I have NOT run out of coffee. I’d be crying if that were the case! I just thought this was funny.)

Verse of the Day

July 24, 2018

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Matthew 19:14

Thoughts on the Verse of the Day

Jesus’ love for children in an age when they weren’t highly regarded is a powerful reminder. It is a reminder of God’s love for what the world often abuses or abandons. We are called to love the unloved, the forgotten, the abused and neglected. Why? Because that is what Israel was in Egypt and that is what Jesus was at Calvary and that is what we were without grace (Romans 5:6-11). How can we claim to know salvation and not share it with others who need that grace!? How can we claim to be Jesus’ disciples and not show love for those the world forgets?

Food for Thought

What on earth is WRONG with people? The news has been filled with horrible, horrible stories about parents killing their children, taking money for people to rape their babies, and other equally unspeakable things! The evil that is running rampant in our world is heart wrenching. There is not a punishment bad enough to give to these monsters, though their ultimate destination is hell, so eventually they will get to meet the one they follow. My heart breaks because so many people today see those headlines and move on without weeping for how far gone the inhabitants of this earth have fallen. I pray for those precious babies and all the precious babies who are in harms way from anyone, but especially the people to whom their safety and well being was entrusted.

Gorgeous Grandma Day
– Grandmothers are wonderful, aren’t they? I was blessed with two amazing ones, both special in her own way. My Grandma H was strong, determined, stubborn, funny and ruled her brood with an iron fist. But she did it with humor. She canned the most delicious peaches I have ever tasted in my life and I can tell you that I truly miss the pleasure of eating them straight out of the jar while she mopped up the juice when I was finished. My Grandma K was sweet through and through and gave everyone around her the sense that they were the most special person in her world. Not a day goes by that I don’t wish my Hubby could have met her, and that she could have met my beautiful Grandbabies. Grandma H was able to meet them, and I am grateful they will have those pictures to look at and be told about these women who were so important to our family. We will tell them about Grandma K, of course, but having her meet them would have been amazing. Obviously, there is nothing we can do about that. Because of how wonderful my Grandma K was, she passed along her loving, motherly ways to my Mom, who in turn has become a Gorgeous Grandma in her own right. It is with a happy heart that I look at pictures of her with my grandchildren, knowing that these moments will be precious to them as they grow up – just as my moments with my Grandmothers are precious to me.

Hot Enough for Ya Day – Every now and again someone will ask me if it’s “hot enough for me?” I’m never sure how to answer that. I don’t like the heat. I like things a little warm – mid 70s maybe – but heat and I just don’t get along at all. I get moody, headachy and just plain grumpy when it gets hot. If I wanted to live in an oven I’d move to Arizona! I know it’s just something that people say in an attempt to be friendly, but yeesh! Some years are hotter than others – for example on July 23, 2011, 14 all-time temperature records were broken and seven were tied in this country. Cameron, PA reached 106 degrees, beating the previous day’s record by 4 degrees! That’s far too hot. So, is it hot enough for ya today? I hope so because for me, being in the 90s, it will be far too hot for my comfort.

This Day in History –

1904 – Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri fills a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream, and the ice cream cone is invented.
1999 – Air Force Colonel Eileen M. Collins becomes the first woman to command a space shuttle.

Food Celebration of the Day –

National Vanilla Ice Cream Day – Vanilla has long held the title of top ice cream flavor. And it’s no wonder — it’s the perfect partner to many desserts and tastes divine all on its own. I was already going to make a batch of low-carb vanilla ice cream today anyway, since it’s hot out and I have some raspberry syrup I made the other day that will be lovely spooned over it. I use the vanilla ice cream recipe from the book Everyday Ketogenic Kitchen by Carolyn Ketchum – it turns out perfectly every single time.

National Hot Dog Day – There’s no doubt about it, Americans love hot dogs. July is National Hot Dog Month, but apparently that is not enough celebrating because a special day was set as well. Heck, on Independence Day alone there are 150 million hot dogs eaten in celebration! July isn’t the only time that Hot Dogs are loved, since annually Americans eat 20 BILLION of them! That’s a LOT of hot dogs! The lovely thing is that there are different kinds for different tastes, beef only, pork/beef mixtures, chicken or turkey, spicy, cheese filled, and the list goes on! Break out the ketchup, mustard and onions because today is yet another day to enjoy this easy to prepare dinner! It’s too hot to cook indoors, so grill these up, kick back and enjoy!

Well, time for a bit of a walk! We aren’t going far – just enough that Moose thinks he got to go on an outing and I can erase my guilt. I’ll give him extra time in the yard after the worst of the heat is over. God bless you and I’ll see you tomorrow!
